#10 – Ship of Fools Cast - Harry Oldmeadow: Black Elk, Lakota Visionary

Black Elk, Lakota Visionary: The Oglala Holy Man and Sioux Tradition

Dr. Harry Oldmeadow, favourite guest of the show, generously joins us again. This week we speak about my personal favourite book of his “Black Elk, Lakota Visionary: The Oglala Holy Man and Sioux Tradition”

His book deals with the famous Lakota Tribe wičháša wakȟáŋ (“medicine man, holy man) Heȟáka Sápa, famously known as Black Elk.

Harry wrote this book from the perspective of the Perennialist school and much of the analysis derives from this perspective. He drew many of his insights from Fritjof Schuon’s association with Black Elk, adding and interesting dimension.

We talk Harry’s own experience with plains tribes, the great ecstatic Sun Dance, the Great Vision of Black Elk and the ridiculous and snide arrogances of the purveyors of shabby and unmaly wordplay and concept daze “kulture” against the savage and wise Noble Red Man. The Plains Tribes encapsulating much of the spirit respected and desired by many listeners.
